Back in the days of the New Haven when nearly everybody smoked, a monogrammed cigarette lighter was a popular gift for the railroad to present to important shippers, members of the press, and other VIPs. Here are a few examples of New Haven Railroad cigarette lighters from the collection of Marc Frattasio.
This cigarette lighter was presented by on-train hostesses to passengers who were on board the Merchants Limited on the occasion of the implementation of a faster 3 hour and 55 minute schedule between Boston and New York City on March 1st, 1949. The brass keepsake was made by Evans.
The New Haven ordered a number of stainless steel lighters from Zippo for distribution to VIPs on board the first press run of the ACF Talgo demonstrator train in late June 1954. These lighters had 'New Haven Railroad - Patrick B. McGinnis - President' engraved on them. Legend has it that a case of these things were lifted from the Talgo train while it was parked at Boston's South Station prior to the press run!
The McGinnis administration ordered additional lighters from Zippo during 1955. These lighters featured Herbert Matter's 'new image' NH logo in a variety of red, white, and black color combinations on the front. The backs of these lighters were engraved with 'Patrick B. McGinnis - President - New Haven Railroad'.
The New Haven Railroad ordered a number of Japanese-made lighters from Hohle during the late 1950s. The Hohle lighters were of lesser quality than the previous Evans and Zippo products.
