The New Haven Railroad's "NH" logo turns 50 years old this year. The NH was designed by Herbert Matter, a Swiss-born photographer and graphic designer who taught at Yale University and consulted for a New York design firm called Knoll Associates (now known as Knoll International).
The NH was intended to be debuted to the public on the cover of the New Haven's 1954 Annual Report, which was distributed sometime between January 1st 1955 (after the railroad's books were closed for 1954) and April 13th 1955 (when the 1955 stockholder's meeting was conducted). It is possible, however, that most people saw the NH logo for the first time after the first of ten General Electric EP-5 class electric passenger locomotive went into service during early 1955.
The New Haven's NH logo is widely recognized in the graphics community as a pioneering example of modern corporate image design. In fact, the NH is so highly respected that today, more than three decades after the demise of the New Haven Railroad, the NH is still employed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation!
