Gate signs were employed at larger passenger stations such as South Station, Back Bay, Grand Central Terminal, and Penn Station to indicate train departure times and stops en-route
Roll-down/up gate signs made of canvas, vinyl, or some other type of coated fabric were employed at many of the larger passenger stations such as Boston's South Station, Back Bay, and New York's Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station to indicate train departure times and stops en-route. Several preserved examples of this type of gate sign can be seen on the here. However, a different type of gate sign was employed at the passenger station in New Haven, CT. These signs were made of sheet metal, not fabric. The signs were stored in wooden boxes at the foot of the stairs in the subway that ran under the station platforms. Here's an example of a metal gate sign from New Haven Union Station from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

These signs were 29 inches long by 18 inches high, hand-painted, and made of a rigid but thin steel plate. They had holes for mounting on hooks positioned near the gate on the track where the train was due to come in on and a wire handle for carrying to and from the storage bin. |
| Many of these metal gate signs were two-sided to save storage space, as is the case with this example, which has the Yankee Clipper on one side and the Merchants Limited on the other. Note the train number in the left hand corner. | ![]() |
