The New Haven Railroad distributed a wide variety of promotional items to shippers, passengers, and VIPs over the years. This month, we spotlight two different promotional travel bags.
![]() | This full-sized vinyl travel bag was distributed by the New Haven Railroad during the mid to late 1960s. Although the exact mechanism for distributing these travel bags is not known, they were most likely given away to freight shippers and first class passengers. It is known, however, that the bags were made available to railroad employees for $5.00 each. |
| The opposite side of the large travel bag features the New Haven's famous "Train Yourself To Relax" cartoon. This cartoon was a fixture on the New Haven's Form 200 public timetables and other advertising material during the mid to late 1960s. This travel bag is from the collection of Ted Polinski. | ![]() |
![]() | The New Haven distributed miniature travel bags made from cotton cloth to children who rode its trains during the mid to late 1950s. The small bag has the NH logo and "New Haven Railroad" printed on both sides. This children's travel bag is from the collection of Marc Frattasio, who is interested in acquiring one of the larger vinyl travel bags shown above. Contact me if you have an example in good condition that you'd like to get rid of. |
