Timetable Change Posters

The New Haven Railroad changed its system timetables at least twice every year. Generally timetables were changed on Sundays in April and October. However, the railroad's schedules change at any time if trains were added to the schedules or (as was more likely as time went on) abolished. To alert passengers to the availability of the new timetables, the railroad posted special timetable change posters at all stations. Here are a few typical New Haven Railroad timetable change posters which were used between the 1930s and the 1960s. All material from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

Here is a typical example of the kind of posters which were used between 1930 and 1955. Earlier posters were similar in design but had 'New York, New Haven and Hartford' spelled out along the bottom.

This poster at right used an alternate design which was frequently used prior to 1955. Timetable change posters were generally made from stiff card. Examples printed before 1955 were typically printed with black ink on white or off-white card.

After 1955, timetable change posters were often printed using colored ink on colored or white cards. The McGinnis NH logo was also commonly incorporated into designs.

This alternate design, which did not include the NH logo, was also used from time to time during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
