The 1964/1965 New York World's Fair

June 1st, 1998

The World's Fair was held in New York City during 1964 and 1965. The New Haven Railroad took advantage of this situation by running special New York World's Fair trains and tours. During 1964 and 1965, you could even get a special 'New York World's Fair Package' from the New Haven Railroad which contained a train schedule and a guide to the fair. Advertising materials from the collection of Marc Frattasio. All images have been reproduced at approximately 10% actual size.

Here is a typical New Haven Railroad flyer from 1964 which advertised trains to the New York World's Fair. Advertising flyers such as this were tacked to bulletin boards or the walls of passenger stations. Note the hole at the top.

During 1964 and 1965, the New Haven Railroad's advertising department would mail you a free 'World's Fair Package' upon request. The 'World's Fair Package' contained a timetable and a special guide to the fair. This is the envelope that the timetable and World's Fair guide came in.

This is the timetable that came in the New Haven Railroad 'World's Fair Package'. It is a 'condensed' schedule showing trains operating on the New Haven's Shoreline Route between Boston and New York (and through to Washington DC via the Pennsylvania Railroad).

This is the special guide to the New York World's Fair that came in the New Haven Railroad's 'World's Fair Package'. The guide unfolded into a map of the New York World's Fair site.

Here we see the front cover of an unusually attractive New Haven Railroad 1964/1965 New York World's Fair folder. This folder contained a special train fare insert and a variety of World's Fair tour options. Note the artwork of the family walking in front of a postwar New Haven Railroad 8600 series Pullman Standard passenger coach. This artwork was used on a number of dining car menus and advertising brochures during the mid 1960s.

This is the back cover of the same brochure. Note the unusual colored EMD FL-9 artwork and NH logo. Most trustee era New Haven Railroad advertising brochures were not this colorful.

This special fare insert was held in a pocket inside the New York World's Fare brochure shown above. The insert listed the train fares between major New Haven Railroad stations and New York City.
