The World's Fair was held in New York City during 1939/1940 and the New Haven Railroad took advantage of the situation by operating special passenger trains from southern New England to the fair site. Advertising materials from the collection of Marc Frattasio. All images have been reproduced at approximately 10% actual size.
This is one of the first New York World's Fair brochures printed by the New Haven Railroad. This brochure was distributed to travel agencies and railroad ticket counters during 1939.
The New Haven Railroad was very proud of their then-new streamlined Baldwin I-5 class steam locomotives and Pullman Standard (Osgood-Bradley) passenger cars. This new passenger equipment was featured on the cover and inside this World's Fair brochure from 1940.
Here is an interesting New Haven Railroad brochure from 1940 which advertised trains to the World's Fair in New York City. This exact same brochure was also used by the New York Central Railroad and possibly other railroad companies operating in New York City. The only differences between all these brochures were the railroad name printed at the bottom of the cover and a bit of railroad specific advertising that was printed in the center spread. This brochure may have actually been printed by the World's Fair authority and distributed to the railroads.
This New Haven Railroad World's Fair brochure is very unusual in that there is no railroad company identification on the cover (other than the image of the New Haven I-5 locomotive). This brochure may have been printed by American Express (who set up tours) for distribution to the New Haven Railroad and this same style of brochure may have been printed for other railroads as well.
This World's Fair brochure is an actual bona-fide New Haven Railroad product. It featured artwork of the New Haven's Baldwin I-5 streamlined Hudson type steam locomotive on the cover and full railroad company identification. This particular brochure is probably the one most commonly encountered by collectors today.
