The New Haven Railroad had self-service luggage carriers at certain stations for use by passengers transporting hand luggage to and from the trains while on the station grounds. These luggage carriers are known to have been used at Boston's South Station and in New Haven, CT but were also probably used at other large stations as well. The New Haven's luggage carriers were made from lightweight steel by the George P. Clark Company of Windsor Locks, CT. In 1955 the luggage carriers were given a cosmetic makeover via the McGinnis administration's red-orange, white, and black color scheme and NH logo courtesy of Herbert Matter. The new image luggage carriers were considered noteworthy enough to have been featured in the January-February 1956 issue of Industrial Design Magazine. This example is from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

This New Haven Railroad luggage carrier was given a McGinnis-era color scheme and graphics by none other than Herbert Matter. In fact, Matter produced a special full-color design sketch just for this item. This particular luggage carrier, which may be the last of its kind, was "liberated" from Boston's South Station around the time of the Penn Central takeover. It managed to survive in pretty good shape only due to its previous owner, a retired New Haven Railroad engineer, using it over the years to carry trash barrels to and from a garden shed to curbside at his summer home! |
