During the late 1950s and early 1960s the financially troubled New Haven Railroad abolished many passenger trains. The traveling public had to be notified of all changes in train service and this was accomplished by means of posters which were displayed at stations along the affected lines. All posters from the collection of Marc Frattasio.
![]() | Here is the famous notice which was posted at stations in the Boston area during the last week of June 1959 to inform passengers that all train service on the Greenbush, Middleboro, and Plymouth lines would be abolished effective June 30th. |
| This poster demonstrates the typical use of the NH logo on train service discontinuance posters printed during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Note that the railroad's full corporate name (The New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company) is spelled out at the top of this poster. | ![]() |
![]() | Although most posters only provided a text explanation of the train service to be cancelled, some of them, like the one shown at left, presented the affected train schedules. This seems to have been done when only some trains on a line were abolished, rather than the entire passenger train service. |
| This train service cancellation poster from January 1960 shows a alternate form of the McGinnis NH logo in which the logo is enclosed within a colored square. | ![]() |
