Back in the days before high-level platforms a device called a "step box" was used to bridge the gap between a passenger car's bottom step and the station platform. Step boxes were typically carried in each passenger car vestibule. The trainman would place the step box on the ground at each station stop and then pick it up before departure. Early step boxes were made of wood. Later examples were made of steel or aluminum. On the New Haven Railroad, the vast majority of step boxes were unmarked with respect to railroad ownership. However, a few rare examples did carry the railroad's name or logo. Step box from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

This New Haven Railroad step box dates from the mid to late 1950s. It has steel sides, an aluminum top, and rubber "feet". It has a square stainless steel tag riveted to one side which is decorated with an engraved McGinnis era "NH" logo that is painted the same way that passenger car logo plates were decorated. Tags like this were also used to mark beverage stands and paper towel holders. Another type of step box is known to exist which has the words "New Haven" stamped in large letters on one side. |
